It is widely accepted that Yara Shahidi is the personification of Black Girl Magic. Intelligent, engaging, beautiful and woke — she has it all. And now, the almost 19-year-old is showing those traits in a very permanent way.
She is tat-tat-tatted up! Just last year, Yara told Essence that for her 18th birthday she’d be getting a tattoo: “Trevor (Shahidi’s “Grown-ish” castmate) actually said that his birthday present to me would be paying for my tattoo, which is kind of scary because now it means that I’ve committed to getting a tattoo. It’s going to say ‘so it goes,’ it’s a Vonnegut reference and I’ve been thinking about it for years. So I’m really excited.”
And now, just days away from her 19th birthday February 10th, Shahidi is showing off her new tat. While speaking to HH at the 25th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, where she was an ambassador, Yara revealed the tattoo saying:
“It’s “’63” for the pivotal year in the Civil Rights movement.
Of course, the March on Washington, Malcolm X gives his grassroots speech, “The F-ire Next Time” by James Baldwin comes out, and then it’s also the year Medgar Evers passed was s-hot. So, it was a pivotal year I think, just in terms of acknowledging that I wouldn’t be here without that.”
No word on if she got “so it goes” as well, or only ’63, but either way it’s nice that bother having significant meaning for her.
What do you think of Yara’s that?
