Denzel Washington is known for being a serious actor, but honestly, he should get into comedy because he’s pretty funny. This was evident when the acting legend visited The Late Show With Stephen Colbert to promote The Equalizer 2.
He finally got to speak on all the stories surrounding him paying for some pretty phenomenal actors to study at Oxford in the U.K. Susan Kelechi Watson of This Is Us shared that he, and Phylicia Rashad, helped cover her studies, and soon after, Chadwick Boseman revealed the same.
Stephen Colbert said that he was actually responsible, in a way, for Chadwick being in box-office juggernaut Black Panther when you really think about it.
“Am I?” he responded in confusion.
“Oh! Because I paid for him to go to school.”
“I didn’t know him,” he said. “Phylicia Rashad was helping kids and she called me and I said, ‘Yeah, I’ll sponsor whoever.’ He called to thank me, that’s how I found out it was him. You’re sponsoring this kid, Chadwick Boseman. ‘Ok, Chadwick. I want my money back.’”
But Denzel said he wasn’t kidding. He joked that he went to the premiere of Black Panther looking to be reimbursed.
“I went to the premiere for Black Panther here in New York. I saw Ryan Coogler and Chad and he said, ‘Oh, I just want to thank you for paying.’ And I said, ‘Yeah, that’s why I’m here,’” he said. “‘I’m not here to see — I liked the movie Black Panther. Wakanda forever, but where’s my money?’”
Denzel’s comical response is similar to the one Chadwick recounted when sharing his story of finally running into him.
“He was like, ‘I haven’t met you yet,’” Chadwick said a few months ago.
“And I said, ‘I gotta tell you something. You paid for me to go to school.’ He said, ‘So that’s why I’m here? You owe me money! I came to collect.’”
As for his response to Susan, she claims the 63-year-old was just happy he could help.
“I’m happy to say he paid for my scholarship to go and we went and had this amazing summer that changed all of our lives,” she said. “I saw Mr. Washington at some occasion years later and I said, ‘Excuse me Mr. Washington, you paid for my scholarship to go,’ and he was like, ‘Yeah, you’re welcome.’ [laughs]”
