On October 13, 1952 – a star was born. Supermodel Beverly Johnson turns 66-years-old next week, and she looks better than ever. Johnson is known to be one of the first successful Black fashion models to exist. In the 1970s and 80s’ is when Johnson got her fame. She is the first black woman to appear on the cover of American Vogue in 1974 and French Elle in 1975. During the course of her career, the supermodel appeared on more than 500 magazine covers and in various advertising campaigns.
Johnson used her modeling career to enter into a new industry. She began an actress and advocated for social issues. Johnson is also known as a singer and businesswoman.
In 2008, The New York Times named Johnson one of the 20th century’s “most influential people in fashion.” In 2012 John was the star of the reality series Beverly’s Full House which aired on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN).
Before becoming a star, Johnson was raised in Buffalo, New York. After graduating from Bennett High School in 1969, Johnson went on to study cri-minal justice at Northeastern University. While in college, Johnson tried modeling in 1971 during summer break. During that time she instantly landed a gig with Glamour and began receiving work steadily.
Fast forward to 1975, Johnson’s work led American fashion designers to begin using African American models for magazine covers and advertisements.
After reaching the peak of her modeling career, Johnson decided to turn to other business ventures. She wrote a book by the name of Beverly Johnson’s Guide to a Life of Health. Johnson also released an album in 1979 in Buddha Records. This album started and ended Johnson’s singing career.
Johnson then began her acting career. Her first leading role was in Ashanti (1979). Johnson had leading roles in other films such as The Meteor Man (1993), Def Jam’s How To Be A Player (1997) and Crossroads (2002). She also made guest appearances in seven television series such as Martin, Law & Order, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, The Parent ‘Hood, and the Super Bowl special of 3rd Rock from the Sun. She later served two seasons as a celebrity judge on the TV Land series She’s Got the Look. The show consisted of 35 women competing for a modeling contract and magazine spread. During the series, Johnson shared how she and other models had suffered from anorexia and bulimia due to their career.
The supermodel has been married twice. She was first married to Billy Potter for four years. After a divorce with Potter; Johnson married again three years later. She married a music producer Danny Sims. The two had a daughter together in December of 1978 — one year later the two divorced.
Despite, Johnson is still making power moves and looking great while doing so.
