The celebration of Nipsey Hussle’s life continues. In the wake of his untimely de-ath on Sunday, March 31, fans of the late rapper commemorated his legacy by listening to his album and mixtapes, helping increase his music sales by 500% on digital platforms. Since then, Hussle has seen an even bigger impact on the Billboard 200 album charts with his debut album, Victory Lap, re-entering at No. 2 this week. The Grammy-nominated LP earned 66,000 equivalent album units in the U.S., up 2,244%, in the week of his t-ragic mur-der, Billboard reports. The project’s current charting position surpasses its original peak at No. 4 in March 2018.
Elsewhere on the chart, Hussle’s previously released mixtapes also made significant marks by making its Billboard debuts this week.
His 2013 mixtape, Crenshaw, landed at No. 63 with 11,000 units, while 2016’s Slauson Boy 2 debuted at No. 109 with 8,000 units, according to the site. The Marathon, released in 2010, and Mailbox Money, released in 2014, bowed at No. 179 and No. 192 with roughly 6,000 units, respectively.
On Friday, April 5, Hussle’s grandmother, Margaret Boutte, spoke with CBS 2 about her grandson’s influence on his community and the world at large. “I never knew there was so much love like I love him,” the 88-year-old shared. “So that’s uplifting that so many people loved and understood him.”
After previous reports claimed Hussle’s family had selected the Staples Center as the location for the slain rapper’s memorial, close friend and entrepreneur Karen Civil confirmed that to be untrue.
“I want to officially let Nipsey Hussle fans & supporters know there will be NO selling of tickets to his memorial. A lot of incorrect information was released today, please know in the upcoming days and an official statement will be made soon,” she tweeted on Saturday, April 6.
