And Idris’ secret talent isn’t actually much of a secret — UK audiences have known about the actor’s side activity for decades.
The London native started DJing during his teens, and since then he’s found ways to balance it with his acclaimed acting career.
Although he’s using his own name for his upcoming Coachella performance, he often performs under the moniker DJ Big Driis. The aspiring actor began DJing in 1986 as part of his uncle’s wedding DJ business, but he soon st-ruck out with his own DJ service.
Since then, the musician and occasional rapper has released his own single and EPs, as well as collaborating with other artists.
He was featured in a Fat Joe video and co-produced and performed on the intro to Jay Z’s American Ga-ngster album. He also collaborated with Macklemore and produced and directed a Mumford and Sons video. Meanwhile, Idris is also celebrating the release of his Netflix show Turn Up Charlie.
The new comedy series will feature the Beasts Of No Nation star as a DJ who has equal trouble handling success and relationships.
The struggling musicians gets a final chance at success when he agrees to be a ‘manny’ to the problem-child daughter of his famous best friend.
The actor and musician will executive produce the series as well as starring in it.
Idris will perform at Coachella on April 13 and 20.
